MDA Poker Ride Was a Success!

The 2nd annual MDA Poker Ride went off without a hitch. There were 100 bikes this year (66 last year) and 17 additional passengers. In all, the ride riased nearly $4000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association!

Open House Scheduled for October 4, 2008

On October 4, 2008, the Amherst Fire Department will host its annual open house at Central Station (68 N. Pleasant St, Downtown). As always, there will be vehicles and equipment on display. There will also be various demonstrations and plenty of firefighters available to answer your questions. Rumor has it, Smokey the Bear will be stopping by again!

Understaffing Makes Local Headlines

District Task Force Activated (6/26/08)
On June 9, 2008, the City of Holyoke, MA fought a fire that engulfed an entire city block. The response went all the way to nine alarms. As part of a district task force, Amherst sent an engine (Engine 2) and a ladder (Ladder 1). Initially the crews were sent to one of the Holyoke stations to cover the city. They were eventually called to help at the scene.

World Series Trophies Visit Amherst (4/7/08)
On April 5th the 2004 and 2007 World Series Trophies were on display at the Amherst Town Hall. Residents were able to see the trophies and have their pictures taken with them. Firefighters from Central Station's "Group 2" had a chance to visit and have their picture taken. The picture is posted on our Misc. Pictures Page.
Firefighters Address the Select Board

The Amherst Firefighters presented the Select Board with the benefits of a Fire-based EMS system and suggestions to improve the level of service.

Fire Department Does Not Meet 1965 Standards
Multiple studies have shown that AFD was understaffed in 1965. This 2003 report shows that staffing levels have not changed since then despite a 500% increase in call volume.
